Let me introduce you to Margery and Fred Nichols. I
first met this wonderful couple in September 2003 at Clay-Widen Alumni
night. As I snapped pictures for a photo album that I’m compiling for the
Alumni, I was drawn to this couple and the warmth that radiated from them. I
was in awe at the love they had for each other. I knew I had to learn as
much about them as I could.
My friend Connie Ramsey Harper (class of 1970) and I
had the pleasure of visiting the Nichols at their home on a warm sunny
October morning. We were greeted with hot coffee and the smell of
mouth-watering muffins in the oven. Fred and Margery begin our visit by
sharing the history of the Golden Delicious Apple.
I was immediately impressed by the connection Margery
and Fred had for Clay High School. Fred graduated in 1941, Margery in 1944. They
had memorabilia from their years at Clay High. They showed us their yearbooks, diploma,
pictures, all in perfect condition. It was as if I had gone back in time.
I could almost imagine I was riding the same school bus they had as young students. Attended the
same Halloween parties they had in their dating years.
Fred and Margery will celebrate their 60th
wedding anniversary April 2004. They have been blessed with four wonderful
daughters and eight grandchildren. The roots of Clay County have been
embedded in them and their life together.
Fred collects clocks, feeds up to one hundred
hummingbirds a day with his eight feeders and 1 ½ gallon mixture that he
prepares for his little friends. Margery plays the piano for enjoyment,
makes delicious apple butter and is very active with organizing her class
reunions.
I personally want to say HAPPY 60TH
ANNIVERSARY!!!
Respectfully,
Carolyn Creswell Stock
